PF measures how efficiently the consumed electrical power is converted into useful work output. PF describes the ratio between the useful (true) power and the total (apparent) power (in kilovolt-amperes) consumed by any AC-powered device - including power supplies. However, the input power factor (PF) also has a significant impact. As the world focuses on energy efficiency in a bid to protect the environment and manage operating costs, the efficient operation of these power supplies becomes increasingly important.Įfficiency as a measure of the ratio between input power and power supplied to the load is well-understood. Electrical energy is supplied by the grid as AC, yet most devices that we use require DC power, meaning that AC/DC power supplies that make this conversion are one of the most common loads placed on energy grids.
